Slowly

The story of Turtle is long. Current research says that Turtle was on the planet 230 million years ago during the Triassic Period. They survived a mass extinction of living organisms during the end of the Triassic Period. Dinosaurs then began to populate the land. An asteroid hit the planet about 145 million years ago, wiping out dinosaurs and other animals. And yet, Turtle survived. Through diversification and adapting, they made it through mighty natural changes.

The story of Human is much shorter. Archeologists would say evidence of modern Homo sapiens is 300,000 years old. Our earliest ancestors are about two million years old.

The pairing of Turtle and Human in this sculpture speaks to respecting the wisdom of Turtle. Humans must “travel” with Turtle and learn what survival takes. For Turtle to continue to survive, Human needs to see the rapid changes we are creating across the planet, from extreme weather patterns, habitat loss, and chemicals permeating the environment to microplastics in the Ocean. “Adapting quickly” is an oxymoron and perhaps not possible for Turtle. And it is not so great for Humans and all other living Beings either.
